MAZES OF INTROSPECTION | Andrea Borin

In the realm of introspection the unconscious mind becomes a captivating landscape to explore, shaping the contours of our thoughts and emotions in ways often beyond immediate awareness. Beneath the surface of conscious thought, the unconscious is a cauldron of emotions, fears and thoughts that fuels our confusion, impacts our actions, our decisions and distorts the perception we have of the world and of ourselves.

Photographs, like dreams, are loaded with unconscious meaning. When we take a photo we bring unconscious aspects of ourselves to the outside, we project in it our history, our experiences, our inner thoughts. As early as the 1930s, the philosopher and critic Walter Benjamin proposed that the camera revealed something he called the optical unconscious. Like latent memories, details in photographs come into focus and become visible. Benjamin describes them as “flashes.”  This photographic project delves into the symbiotic relationship between introspection and the unconscious mind, seeking to visually articulate its subtle interplay.

About the author: Andrea Borin

“I’m an Italian-born visual artist currently living in New Zealand and based in Tauranga (Bay of Plenty). In my works I use photography as a poetic and metaphorical language, attempting to create images in which reality and imagination overlap. This combination enables me to unveil thought-provoking narrative that invites viewers to engage on multiple levels. My artistic approach often revolves around the deliberate manipulation of images, a process that serves as a means to disrupt their inherent stability (or instability) to the extent where meanings are shifted, reinforced or completely changed. The resulting imagery becomes a playground for multifaceted interpretations – a strategy designed not only to alter the way we think about our physical and social world, but also to take that world into extraordinary dimensions”.
